Comparing Magellan GPS Product Lines

Magellan GPS, a company established in 1986 to specialize in GPS-related products is a direct competitor of Garmin GPS and Tom Tom GPS. The three market leaders produces the best GPS units in the market and they all strive to get a larger share of the industry. So you might be wondering, what makes Magellan GPS stand out among the others? Well, it is important to look at the quality of products each company produce, their price range, and their actual capability.

Basically, Garmin GPS produces the most number of units available. This gives the company a big advantage because consumers can choose from a variety of design, additional features, and price range. The Garmin GPS also tends to produce the best GPS units in many categories for drivers, pilots, mariners, or even backpackers.

How does the Magellan GPS compare with these models? You should note that Magellan GPS units are specifically designed for the average user. It targets the general population with simple needs. This means that Magellan GPS systems tend to be more affordable, more user-friendly, and simpler for everyday needs.

The Product Lines

The first Magellan GPS that is designed for automobile navigation is the Magellan Maestro. Among the units offered are the 3100, the 3140, the 4000, and the 4040. One of its latest offering is the 4050 which also happens to be more expensive among the rest because of its advanced features. The entry-level Magellan Maestro 3100 has no voice-directed instruction capability. Meanwhile, the Magellan Maestro 4050 has voice-activated control features, voice turn-by-turn directions, FM receiver for traffic information, and Bluetooth calling. The mid-range models of Magellan GPS offers respectable capabilities as well.

Aside from the Magellan Maestro, the company has produced the Magellan Roadmate product line as well. Right now, the only cheap model in this line is the 2200T which has been designed for vehicle navigation and outdoor use. It is a portable device that offers turn-by-turn directions capability. It is waterproof as well so water sports enthusiast need not worry.

Other GPS units within the Magellan Roadmate product line include the 2000, 300, 3050, 360, 700, and 800 among others. Another notable Magellan GPS product line is the CrossoverGPS. This series is basically designed for water and land navigation. The 2500T is the flagship product of this series. Although I’m sure a lot of people would disagree with me, I believe that Garmin makes the best car GPS system currently on the market. Let me give you a few reasons in my defense.

For one thing Consumer Reports did an article on the best car GPS systems recently. Out of the seven GPS’s mentioned, four of them were made by Garmin. Furthermore their top GPS system was the Gamin nuvi 760!

Let’s explore this in some detail. First off Consumer Reports listed the following seven GPS systems:

• The Garmin nuvi 760
• The Garmin nuvi 660
• The Garmin nuvi 350
• The Garmin nuvi 260
• The Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition
• The Tom Tom GO 920T
• and the Magellan Maestro 4250

The Garmin nuvi 760 sells for less than $400 and is one of the most full-featured GPS systems on the market. It can do multiple routing, has Bluetooth, has the larger 4.3-inch screen, can get real-time traffic and weather, has maps of the 50 United States plus Canada, and can route its sound through your car’s stereo system. For that money, I can’t think of a better deal on the market.

The nuvi 660 is just like the 760 except it can’t do the multiple point routing. (That is it can only handle one destination at a time.) The nuvi 660 sells for about $50 less than the nuvi 760.

The nuvi 350 is a slighly older model. Instead of having the antenna inside of the device’s case where you can’t see it, it’s contained in a little flap on the back that you have to pull out. The nuvi 350 has the smaller 3.5-inch screen and can’t do Bluetooth, but it only sells for a mere $200!

The Garmin nuvi 260 is the only GPS on Consumer Reports’ list that I disagree with. The nuvi 260 sells for a little more than the nuvi 350 does, and it’s got the sleeker case where you don’t need to extend the antenna. This is a personal thing, but I’m not sure that justifies the difference in price.

As far as Tom Tom their Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition sells for $150 and has a few more features than Garmn’s similar product, the nuvi 200.

Tom Tom’s GO 920T is a direct competitor with Garmin’s nuvi 660 and 760, yet sells for about $40 more.

Magellan I think has the most competitive product when compared with Garmin’s nuvi line. Magellan’s Maestro 4250, which sells for only about $250, really packs a lot of features for the price. Also, they have a great deal with AAA, where they offer the AAA Tour Book directly on their device for AAA members only.

Although, I’ll concede that at certain price points, Garmin doesn’t have the best product, I think overall they absolutely dominate the GPS marketplace in the United States. Perhaps the Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition offers more than the Garmin nuvi 200, and for the same price. Also, as I said, for the money, the Magellan Maestro 4250 is really the best deal around.

But I completely agree with Consumer Reports that the nuvi 760 is the best car GPS system overall! Garmin dominates the higher price range anyway. And I can’t think of another system that offers more for the money than the nuvi 760.

Whether you decide to buy a Garmin or not is not the issue. The issue is of course finding the right car GPS system for you and your needs.
